The Tata Harrier and Safari have been making waves in the Indian automotive market with their recent facelifts and impressive Global NCAP safety ratings. While these SUVs have already garnered substantial attention, their potential for higher sales could soon be unlocked with the introduction of petrol variants.
A Shift in Consumer Preferences
Many industry experts and enthusiasts have pointed out that the absence of a petrol engine option may have limited the sales potential of the Harrier and Safari. Most of their best-selling mid-size SUV rivals, such as the Scorpio N, XUV700, MG Hector, and Hyundai Alcazar, offer both diesel and petrol engine choices. The availability of a petrol variant aligns with changing consumer preferences and market dynamics.
Impact on Sales and Compliance
When the Harrier and Safari finally get petrol variants, it will be fascinating to observe the impact on sales and the percentage contribution of these new models. Petrol options not only expand the customer base but also provide a level of protection against potential stricter emission norms in the future. Achieving compliance with petrol engines is relatively easier and more cost-effective compared to diesel engines, which can be a critical advantage as emission regulations evolve.
Electric Variants on the Horizon
While electric versions of the Harrier and Safari are in development, widespread acceptance of electric vehicles may take some time. Therefore, it’s crucial to continue offering petrol options in the interim.
Lower Starting Prices and Enhanced Accessibility
The introduction of petrol variants is likely to result in lower starting prices for the Harrier and Safari, making these SUVs more accessible to a broader range of customers. Currently, the Harrier starts at Rs 15.49 lakh, while the Safari begins at Rs 16.19 lakh for the manual variant. Automatic, sunroof, and ADAS-equipped variants have higher starting prices. Petrol variants are expected to be approximately Rs 1 lakh cheaper compared to their diesel counterparts, further enhancing their attractiveness.
1.5-Litre Turbo Petrol Engine Confirmed
Tata Motors has officially confirmed the introduction of a 1.5-litre TGDi 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine for the Harrier and Safari. This engine produces 170 PS of maximum power and 280 Nm of peak torque. It is expected to be paired with a choice of a 6-speed manual or a DCT gearbox, offering a balanced blend of power and fuel efficiency.
With the addition of petrol variants and the upcoming turbo petrol engine, the Tata Harrier and Safari are poised to further strengthen their position in the Indian SUV market. The lower starting prices, combined with the renowned safety features and new engine options, are expected to attract a broader audience, reinforcing Tata Motors’ commitment to delivering versatile and customer-centric vehicles.
