Skoda Auto is making bold moves in India, and its recent announcement of an affordable electric vehicle (EV) is generating significant buzz in the automotive industry. With India’s rapidly growing interest in electric mobility, Skoda aims to capitalize on this trend by introducing a budget-friendly EV that could potentially disrupt the market.

The company, which plays a pivotal role in Skoda Auto India’s operations, has plans to manufacture and supply several vehicles to India and other markets within the ASEAN region from its Chakan plant. Among the upcoming models are the Superb, Slavia, Octavia sedans, Kushaq SUV, and the highly anticipated Enyaq premium electric SUV.

However, the real game-changer in Skoda’s lineup is the confirmation of an affordable EV designed for the Indian market. While details are still emerging, it’s highly likely that this electric offering will take the form of an eSUV, given the increasing popularity and demand for SUVs in India.

Skoda Auto board member for Sales and Marketing, Martin Jahn, disclosed the company’s plans to introduce the Enyaq premium EV in India, followed by the much-anticipated affordable eSUV. When Skoda mentions “affordable,” it’s poised to rival popular EVs in India’s sub-Rs. 20 lakh price bracket, including the recently launched Tata Nexon.ev, Mahindra XUV400, and the upcoming Citroen eC3 Aircross.

To achieve this ambitious goal, Skoda is considering multiple potential partnerships and exploring options to localize a modified version of Volkswagen’s renowned MEB platform. This strategic move aims to keep the EV’s price point competitive in a market that’s becoming increasingly electric-savvy.

The estimated price range for Skoda’s upcoming affordable EV is expected to be between USD 15,000 to USD 20,000, translating to approximately Rs. 12.5 lakh to Rs. 16.6 lakh with current conversion rates. This pricing strategy reflects Skoda’s commitment to making electric mobility accessible to a wider audience in India.

When it comes to potential partnerships, Mahindra stands out as a strong contender due to previous collaborations with Volkswagen on the MEB platform and powertrains. Additionally, Skoda may explore the option of leveraging Mahindra’s INGLO platform, further streamlining the development process.

One intriguing possibility is that Skoda might electrify existing models, such as the Kushaq SUV or the Slavia sedan, both based on the MQB A0 IN platform. By converting existing vehicles to electric powertrains, Skoda can optimize manufacturing efficiency and design while reducing development costs. This approach could align well with the targeted price range.

While the specific details of Skoda’s affordable EV are yet to be revealed, it’s evident that the company is committed to delivering an electric vehicle that combines affordability and profitability. The launch is expected to take place in 2025, and it could potentially introduce an electrified version of the popular Kushaq SUV or the Slavia sedan to Indian consumers.

In addition to this exciting development, it’s worth noting that the Skoda Kushaq SUV, made in India, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing a full 5-star safety rating in both child occupants and adult occupants, reinforcing its position as one of India’s safest cars. Skoda’s commitment to safety aligns perfectly with India’s growing emphasis on road safety and responsible driving.

Skoda Auto’s foray into affordable EVs has the potential to reshape India’s electric vehicle landscape and offer consumers a compelling choice in the rapidly evolving EV market. With Skoda’s reputation for quality and safety, this upcoming EV could be a game-changer in India’s journey towards sustainable and electrified transportation.
