Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari revealed that the Indian government has sanctioned national highway projects worth almost Rs 3 lakh crore over the past decade in Northeast India. This initiative has led to a remarkable 45 percent increase in the length of national highways in the region. However, Gadkari also issued a caution, stating that land acquisition issues are posing challenges in some Northeastern states like Nagaland and Meghalaya. If these problems aren’t resolved promptly, some of the projects may face closure.

In a press conference held after a comprehensive review of the progress of national highway works in Assam, Nitin Gadkari highlighted the significant developments in the region. He stated that projects worth Rs 2,89,425 crore have been allocated to the Northeast over the last ten years. These projects encompass both upcoming, ongoing, and completed initiatives.

The length of national highways in the Northeast has surged from approximately 10,800 kilometers in 2014 to a substantial 15,740 kilometers at present. This noteworthy increase is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and connectivity in the region. To further bolster this effort, the Union Minister announced the sanction of Rs 800 crore under two schemes specifically designed to benefit Assam.

The allocation of substantial funds for national highway projects in the Northeast reflects the government’s dedication to improving transportation infrastructure in this region, which has historically faced connectivity challenges due to its hilly terrain and remote locations. This investment is expected to stimulate economic growth, boost trade and commerce, and enhance the overall quality of life for the residents of Northeast India.

However, the warning about land acquisition issues serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in executing large-scale infrastructure projects. Resolving these challenges in a timely manner will be crucial to ensuring the successful completion of the sanctioned national highway initiatives. The government’s commitment to addressing these issues and fostering development in the Northeast is evident, and the region is poised to experience significant transformation in the years to come.
