In a testament to its popularity and prowess in the Indian automobile market, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing 100,000 unit sales within a mere 12 months of its launch. Launched on September 26, 2022, this midsize SUV has swiftly garnered a loyal following, impressing buyers with its fuel-efficient hybrid system, intelligent packaging, and exceptional interior quality. Despite formidable competition in the midsize SUV segment, the Grand Vitara has not only thrived but also carved a niche for itself in the Indian automotive landscape.
The Grand Vitara’s Rapid Ascent
Since its launch up to the end of August 2023, the Maruti Grand Vitara recorded a total of 99,317 units sold, leaving it a mere 683 units short of the remarkable 100,000-unit milestone. Given the average daily sales of 349 units from June to August 2023, it’s highly likely that the Grand Vitara crossed the coveted 100,000-unit threshold within the first few days of September 2023. Notably, August 2023 marked the SUV’s highest monthly wholesales, with 11,818 units, as Maruti Suzuki strategically ensured ample dealer stock to meet the heightened demand during the festive season. Anticipations are high that the model’s sales figures for September 2023 will surpass those of August.
The Grand Vitara’s Key Strengths
The Grand Vitara made its entry into the midsize SUV market as demand for this segment was on the rise. It features a diverse range of 12 variants, with Mumbai’s on-road pricing starting from Rs 12.99 lakh for the base Sigma variant and extending up to Rs 23.68 lakh for the top-end Alpha+ variant. What sets the Grand Vitara apart is its two engine options shared with the Toyota Hyryder.
The first engine is a proven 103hp, 1.5-liter K15C petrol mild-hybrid powertrain, also found in several other Maruti Suzuki models. It is available with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. The second engine is sourced from Toyota, featuring a 92hp, 1.5-liter, three-cylinder Atkinson cycle petrol engine paired with an electric motor that generates 79hp and 141Nm of torque. Together, this hybrid powertrain produces 115hp and is connected to an e-CVT gearbox. Maruti Suzuki claims an impressive fuel efficiency of 27.97kpl for this hybrid powertrain.
Visually, the Grand Vitara shares similarities with the Toyota Hyryder, with distinct features such as a chrome applique on the C-pillar, unique alloy wheels, and a full-width LED light bar on the tailgate differentiating it. The interior of the Grand Vitara closely resembles that of the Hyryder, differing mainly in color schemes. Both SUVs share the same steering wheel design, touchscreen infotainment system, instrument cluster, and switchgear. In terms of features, top-spec Grand Vitara variants boast a panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, wireless charger, ambient lighting, connected car technology, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), hill-hold assist, a tire pressure monitoring system, and six airbags.
CNG Variant and Export Success
In January 2023, just four months after its launch, Maruti Suzuki introduced a CNG variant of the Grand Vitara to broaden its market reach. Priced competitively at Rs 12.85 lakh (Delta MT) and Rs 14.84 lakh (Zeta MT) ex-showroom, the CNG variant is equipped with the proven K-series 1.5-liter petrol engine, delivering a claimed fuel efficiency of 26.6 km/kg. This expansion of Maruti Suzuki’s CNG model range aligns with the brand’s commitment to offering fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly options to consumers.
Furthermore, in January 2023, Maruti Suzuki achieved an important milestone by exporting the first batch of made-in-India Grand Vitaras to Latin America via the Kamarajar Port. This marked the 17th export model for Maruti Suzuki, highlighting its growing global presence and demand for Indian-manufactured vehicles.
Conclusion
The Maruti Grand Vitara’s journey in the highly competitive midsize SUV market has been nothing short of remarkable. It has not only expanded the segment but also established itself as a prominent player. With its fuel-efficient hybrid technology, thoughtful design, and premium features, the Grand Vitara has resonated with Indian consumers, winning critical acclaim and amassing a significant number of bookings. As it continues to drive its sales footprint in the market, the Grand Vitara stands as a testament to Maruti Suzuki’s ability to adapt to evolving consumer preferences and excel in the fiercely competitive Indian automotive industry.
