Enhanced Transmission Promises Improved Performance and Positioning in the Competitive Compact SUV Segment

Mahindra, a prominent name in the SUV arena, is gearing up to elevate its XUV300 offering to a new level with a range of updates, including a segment-first panoramic sunroof. While the XUV300 has maintained steady sales since its launch, it has yet to reach the stellar numbers achieved by its competitors like the Maruti Brezza, Tata Nexon, and Hyundai Venue. However, Mahindra aims to change this narrative with the forthcoming facelift of the XUV300.

Revolutionizing the Drive with Aisin-Sourced Automatic Gearbox

The current iteration of the XUV300 offers a 6-speed manual transmission and a 6-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) across its three engine options. These include a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine generating 110 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque, a 1.2-litre TGDi turbo petrol unit producing 130 PS and 230 Nm of standard torque (up to 250 Nm with transient overboost function), and a 1.5-litre diesel engine with 117 PS and 300 Nm.

The facelifted XUV300 is set to introduce a new Aisin-sourced 6-speed automatic gearbox, replacing the existing AMT. This transition is expected to result in more seamless gearshifts and improved overall driving dynamics. The decision to incorporate this new automatic transmission is likely influenced by consumer feedback and is anticipated to enhance the XUV300’s positioning in the sub-4-meter compact SUV segment. Mahindra has a history of successful collaborations with Aisin, with the 6-speed automatic gearbox already in use in Mahindra’s XUV700 and Scorpio N models, as well as the now-discontinued XUV500.

The Impact and Engine Options

While the introduction of the 6-speed automatic transmission is confirmed for the XUV300, it remains to be seen whether it will be available for both petrol and diesel variants or exclusively for a specific engine option. This decision could significantly contribute to unlocking the full potential of the XUV300 facelift.

A Complete Transformation

In addition to the enhanced transmission, the XUV300 facelift is expected to feature a refreshed exterior and interior. Anticipated updates include a larger touchscreen infotainment system with improved graphics and functions, along with a new digital instrument cluster. The crowning jewel of the XUV300’s facelift will be the first-in-segment panoramic sunroof. The facelifted XUV300 is slated for launch in the first half of 2024 and will continue to compete with popular rivals such as the Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, Kia Sonet, and Hyundai Venue. With the Nexon already updated and the Sonet facelift on the horizon for early 2024, the compact SUV segment is set to witness intense competition, making the XUV300’s upcoming transformation all the more significant.

In summary, Mahindra’s decision to introduce an Aisin-sourced automatic gearbox in the XUV300 facelift marks a significant step forward in enhancing the vehicle’s performance and positioning in a competitive market. This move, combined with other expected updates, sets the stage for an exciting new chapter in the XUV300’s journey.
